(1919–83)
Bishop and Theologian.
Robinson was the son of a Canon of Canterbury Cathedral and was a student of C.H. dodd at Cambridge University. After teaching at the university, he became Anglican Bishop of Woolwich in 1959. A New Testament scholar, he is primarily remembered for his Honest to God, published in 1963. This questioned the conventional supernatural image of a ‘God out there’ and asked whether Jesus should be regarded as God ‘dressed up’ as a human being. It was serialised in a Sunday newspaper and caused a sensation. He was unfairly accused of atheism and was seen by many as symbolising the uncertainities of the 1960s.
